About

The English Society was founded in late 2014 by Subhashini Robert William (Vice President), Shanelle Mattu (Treasurer), Pálína Guðnadóttir (Secretary), Katarzyna Kwaśniewska (Editor) and Ryan Browne (President). We were established by the Students' Union in October and, from there, have run successful poetry nights, guest talks, a film screening and a debate. Our society began with the ambition - first and foremost - to make English fun in order to provide English students with a healthier academic life and, hopefully, to boost our subject and university in the universities' ranking tables.

One of the proudest accomplishments we achieved however was to integrate all English students in the creation of a wonderful, growing community. We have managed to unite students from English literature, English language and creative writing, and we are hoping to integrate linguistics students by having a linguistics undergrad on the committee.
The society meets every Monday unless there are valid reasons not to (i.e. if submission deadlines approaching or members are under stress). Our meetings can run from one hour to two hours depending on how long we need the session to run (film screenings and debates are usually around the two-hour bracket), and we always go to a pub or restaurant afterwards for our "weekly social". We will have trips for you to come along to, such as gallery, theatre or cinema trips, and you can find updates about new events on our Facebook page.
Throughout our existence we spoke of forming a magazine and of the possibilities of a print or web publication; we decided it would be best to stick to an online format for now (which will be accessible to all English students and to those who wish to read their work) upon which we can continue building. We are looking for creative works of both fiction and non-fiction. Our submission guidelines can be found on the "Submission Guidelines" page.
We look forward to expanding both the society and this blog. Best wishes to all of you!
